Mapping the Research Landscape in Subtitling: Current Trends and Future Directions

This presentation aims to offer an overview of current and emerging research areas in subtitling, targeting academics and PhD students in Translation Studies. It maps key themes including technological advancements (AI, MTPE, automation); subtitling for accessibility (SDH, closed captioning, legal frameworks); diverse practices (creative, fan, intralingual subtitles, dubtitles); and ethical concerns (authorship, copyright, AI training data). It also presents research areas related to translation challenges (humor, culture, censorship), viewer reception (cognition, eye-tracking), professional realities (workflows, working conditions), pedagogy and training developments, as well as the theoretical aspects of subtitling within AVT and Translation Studies. The goal is to highlight critical research questions and identify underexplored areas in this multifaceted field.

Bionote: Stavroula Sokoli (she/her), PhD, is a Senior Researcher at the Computer Technology Institute, Greece. Being a frequent invited speaker, she has led funded projects in AVT and authored over 25 publications. She also serves as a Greek language lead for media localization vendors and has worked as a subtitler and trainer since 2001. She is the Vice President of ESIST.
